IRRI Achievements to Date ...

The achievements of International Resources and Recycling Institute to date are as follows:

  1. European Waste Management Programme: Full partner. This programme was designed to develop innovative ideas for European waste management in voluntary recycling practices, landfill closures and organisation structures. IRRI helped guide the research and development analysis and findings, which have contributed to policy and information at a European level.

  2. ReRegions Programme: Full Partner. This programme was concerned with environmental and socio-economic regeneration in regions of former Brown Coal mining. IRRI led the work to develop a concept for business creation in the Green Economy, which would have particular application to regions of decayed traditional industries. This has contributed to economic development thinking, and pioneers a new method of business incubation for the Green Economy.

  3. Ecowatsa Programme: Sub-Contract Supplier. This programme explored new methods of evaluating waste management strategies in remote rural Northern European communities. IRRI was contracted to develop a new methodology of assessment and evaluation to act as a decision-support tool.

  4. Economic Development: Set up and managed an exploratory pilot for business and job creation in the Green Economy, in the Tayside region, called Green Shoots. Concept is in planning for extension to four different European locations.

  5. Software Creation: Designed and created software programme for modelling waste management options in remote rural Northern European communities, called Ecologics.

  6. Network Creation: Created a network of 35 working partners in 18 different countries, representing the public, private and academic sectors to deliver the international projects promised by IRRI. It has secured the commitments necessary to construct the partnership, has identified the conceptual framework, and is being approached by an ever-increasing number of European bodies for participation in new international projects. The core network, which has expressed support for the IRRI concept on a European basis, includes organisations from the public, private and academic sector, and represents more than half of the EU Member States. The full list, in alphabetical order by Member State, is as follows:
